According the the Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection ( DEP ), a hazardous waste does not simply
include a blood saturated product. It includes any item contaminated by
any body fluid that has been used during medical
or laboratory procedures.
Other items, for example could include ( but are not
limited to ): -
Barrier items such as gloves, masks, and disposable
gowns.
Intravenous bags that have been used for blood
transfusions. Items contaminated by any body fluids during routine
medical and dental office visits, surgery or autopsy.
Pathological
wastes - including tissues, organs, body parts and fluids removed during
medical procedures.
Obviously, there is a broad range of items required to be
removed at least every 30 days, and "legal" destruction can only be
certified by a medical waste manifest on file in each office producing
such waste. Failing to do so can result in "very large
fines".
